The Fiji Times » Motorists reminded of safety precautions on Fijian roads

Motorists are reminded to continue to keep a safe distance to prevent accidents on wet and slippery roads and to avoid driving in flooded areas.

According to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), prolonged rains and heavy flooding across the country, particularly in the western and northern divisions, have saturated unpaved roads, rendering some roads impassable.

FRA Director General Kamal Prasad said currently unpaved roads are unsuitable for heavy transport and small cars.

FRA staff are on the ground to monitor the situation and will deploy contractors as soon as possible to address these weak points.

“The continual rain encountered is hampering the ability of our contractors to carry out repair work. In the meantime, motorists are advised to be patient and drive in the conditions,” Mr Prasad said.

“Repairs will be prioritized in accordance with the hierarchy of road use, i.e. highways will be repaired first, then arterial roads followed by secondary roads and finally secondary roads,” he added. .

Mr Prasad said some roads remained impassable due to flooding.

“We are waiting for the water to recede on some roads before we can assess the damage.”

Members of the public can contact the FRA toll free number 5720 regarding the affected roads and crossings.
