State and local leaders discuss legislation to support public safety officers
HOUSTON – US Senator John Cornyn met with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner and Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña to discuss the recent introduction. Public Safety Officers Support Act.
After a round table, a press conference was organized to discuss the initiative with the public.
The roundtable was expected to highlight bipartisan legislation that would support the families of officers struggling with their mental health or who are lost in trauma-related suicides.
During the roundtable, Houston leaders shared the stressful challenges that public safety officers face on a daily basis and discussed how this legislation will extend the same benefits of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to law enforcement officers, firefighters and medical first responders that the military provides.
After the roundtable, Senator Cornyn toured the Houston Police Department Museum, including the Wall of Honor exhibit, and then held a press conference to discuss the legislation.
The bipartisan, bicameral Public Safety Officers Support Act expand the Public Safety Officer Benefits (PSOB) program to create a way for officers to apply for disability benefits for PTSD and, in certain circumstances, provide surviving families with PSOB benefits in the event of death by suicide.
