The South Carolina State Fair is less than two months away, and CEO Nancy Smith enthusiastically announced the return of the beloved annual event in person at a press conference Monday. It will be held from October 13 to 24.

While guests can return to the fairgrounds and enjoy the 70 rides, exhibits, fairground food, and games, a few new security measures will be implemented this year.

“We are aware of the ever-changing COVID landscape. The safety of our customers has always been our number one priority, and that has not changed. We are committed to making and maintaining your fair a safe one,” Smith said. .

The SC State Fair will follow the latest CDC guidelines at the time of the event, national and local mask guidelines, increase hand hygiene stations, offer limited contact payment options, provide increased cleaning protocols and display hygiene signs throughout the exhibition grounds.

Smith also said they strongly encourage all fair visitors to assess their own potential risk of exposure to COVID-19 before choosing to attend, noting that vaccines remain the best protection against the virus.

In addition to COVID precautions, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook spoke about what will be done to ensure the overall safety of guests.

According to Lott, there will be a large amount of law enforcement throughout the fairgrounds from opening to closing. There will also be an update to metal detector technology and an update to the youth admissions policy. One of the new security protocols will be a transparent bags policy, similar to others already in place in Colombia.

All of the fair’s attractions, including agriculture, art and plant exhibits, sand sculpture, live music, and even the free circus that appeared in 2019, will be back this year.

According to Smith, there will be an updated and expanded new cookie kitchen and new fair-trade kitchen, including a steak and egg sundae, fried lava cakes, roasted corn and seafood.

“We are ready for people to come back and enjoy some special time at the South Carolina State Fair,” she said.
