New Governor Kathy Hochul visited PS 143, Louis Armstrong School, Corona, Queens Wednesday to speak with administrators about a safe transition for all students returning to school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hochul, who will replace incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo on August 24, stressed the importance of vigilance in schools as New York City continues to fight the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.
“There is tremendous anxiety among parents, teachers, administrators, who thought what we went through last year would be the case,” Hochul said. “The Delta variant has changed the dynamics considerably; we must continue to be vigilant.
School administrators shared that many safety precautions have been put in place ahead of the next school year. In addition to standard personal protective equipment, the school has a carbon dioxide meter that measures carbon dioxide levels in a room, ensuring good ventilation. Each school guard has one to check the air flow in a given space.
The current lieutenant governor has said there is no doubt the children need to go back to school.
“This time away from school, away from the life they knew, has been debilitating for our children, and we’re going to have to help them recover,” Hochul said.
Hochul recommended mental health services for children and pledged to continue conversations with superintendents and other school officials about how best to help students get back to their routines safely.
“I need time to continue the interviews, [listen] to people, get people’s opinions and [put] together the dream team to lead New York State into the future, ”said Hochul.
Hochul mentioned that his strong working relationship with Mayor Bill de Blasio will be immense in their efforts to protect the children as they return to school.
