Meta launches Instagram safety guide for parents

MANILA — Technology company Meta on Tuesday launched Safer Internet Day, a guide for Filipino parents on Instagram’s safety features to protect the well-being of their children.

Three of the Instagram features discussed are message controls, account privacy, and the new pause feature.

Message controls can customize the direct messages kids see by filtering words and even the number of likes, while Account Privacy gives teens a default private status.

The pause feature could customize the time allotted to their children on the platform.

“At Instagram, we continue to learn and be inspired by how teens use social media, especially how they develop their identities and share real issues while using our platform,” said Philip Chua of Instagram.

“We want them to feel that Instagram is a safe and supportive place to express their authentic identity,” he added.

The guide was developed by Plan International Philippines, the Youth Mental Health Coalition, in collaboration with experts and internet stars Doug and Chesca Kramer.

Youth for Mental Health Coalition National President Ray Alyannah Lagasca says it’s best to guide children in their use of social media.

“Parental guidance actually helps children avoid confusion when it comes to developing their identity. At the same time, it helps them avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms,” she said.

“How should parents do that? It is of course to be able to make his presence felt, to make his child understand that he is there with him and to monitor him constantly and regularly.

Parents and guardians can download the tips here and the Filipino version will be available soon.
