Liberty Lagoon kicks off summer; urges water, COVID safety measures

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Hundreds of people spent their Memorial Day weekend at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon.

BREC aquatics manager Daniel Burg said the water park is beating business after the pandemic. He said BREC understands the pandemic is still real and the park is adjusting to a new world.

“We have a capacity limit. We’re trying to limit that as much as possible so we don’t have a big outbreak,” Burg said. “Our food and concession [workers] wear a mask and gloves.

For some families, this summer is their most normal summer since the pandemic began.

“Bring your children here,” said one mother. “It’s wonderful to be here with the children.”

As temperatures warm and families head back to the water, Burg is also emphasizing water safety.

“When you come to a facility, don’t be on your iPad or your iPhone, don’t get in the water with kids, do this bonding experience,” he said.

In 2019, Louisiana saw a 60% increase in infant and child drownings (ages 0-14), from 15 in 2019 to 24 in 2020.

“Tragically, the number of children in Louisiana we’ve lost to drowning continues to rise,” said state health officer Dr. Joseph Kanter. “I urge everyone to follow a few simple but essential steps to keep you and your children safe around the water we all love to enjoy.”

LDH provides water safety tips:

  • Supervise children when they are in or around water at all times; avoid getting distracted.
  • Teach children to swim and survive in water.
  • Take CPR classes. Visit cpr.heart.org to find a class near you.
  • If you have a pool or spa, install layers of protection, including a four-sided fence with a self-closing and latching door.
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid traps.
  • Wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket when boating or participating in other water activities.
  • Swim in designated swimming areas and exercise extreme caution around natural bodies of water which may have unpredictable currents and undertows.

Liberty Lagoon is recruiting for a few other lifeguard positions. More information is available here.
